World Rainforest Day is a day for us to reflect on the importance of our diverse rainforests.
Rainforests support a large biodiversity, they also produce oxygen, materials and ingredients for us humans to survive. We must not exploit our precious rainforests! Our rainforests are an extremely important piece of earths delicate balance of sustaining life. There are many ways we can protect our rainforests wheather you live near one or not. We must become more educated on the products we buy/consume from day to day life. There are many things that can directly impact the health of our rainforests from paper to chocolate to palm oil to medicine. Now I am not saying don't consume/buy these products I am just suggesting that you make yourself aware of the impacts that your consumerism has on our environment and have a look for a brand that source their materials/ingredients from sustainable sources which have minimal impact on our rainforests and ultimately our climate!
There are also many other ways you can help.
Here is an Australian not for profit organisation 'Rainforest 4 Foundation' who buy back land specifically from the Daintree Rainforest to keep it protected with the help of our donations.
They also help protect and restore our rainforests with a variety of other projects.
'Essential to our survival, rainforests are responsible for more than 25% of all Western medicine and house more than 50% of the world’s plant and animal species. Only covering 2 percent of the planet’s surface area, rainforests are dense and concentrated; however, they directly provide for indigenous populations who live off the land and work to protect this precious resource.'
WHY WORLD RAINFOREST DAY?
Rainforests are vital for the survival of life on Earth. They absorb our carbon dioxide, stabilize climate patterns, and are home to half the world’s plant and animal species.
Yet every minute, we lose 40 football fields of rainforests, which threatens our biodiversity and imperils our planet’s health. Deforestation causes 15% of global carbon dioxide emissions that accelerate climate change—more than from all cars in the U.S. and China combined. Natural climate solutions like protecting and restoring forests, however, could reverse global emissions by a third.
World Rainforest Day celebrates this precious natural resource and encourages action to preserve it. Your efforts, together with the actions of others, will have a positive impact on rainforests and the climate worldwide.
'The United Nations has officially recognized the vital role that indigenous people play in fighting deforestation and preserving biodiversity. Unfortunately, world governments have failed to protect Indigenous lands from logging, mining, ranching, oil exploration, and other harmful activities. Hundreds of Indigenous environmental and human rights activists have been murdered for speaking out against the industries that threaten their land and way of life.
